Red Flags That Cut Any Material’s Lifespan in Half
Material choice doesn’t save a bad installation. These are the failure patterns I’ve written up on insurance claims over and over:
- No drainage plane. Housewrap or felt paper behind the siding is not optional. It’s the fallback when the siding lets water past it — and all siding lets water past it eventually. That’s not a flaw. That’s physics. The drainage plane is what keeps that water from sitting against your sheathing.
- Wrong nail placement. Overdriven nails crack vinyl at the hem. Underdriven nails on fiber cement leave panels racking in wind load. The spec is 6 inches on-center into studs, driven into the nail hem slot — not through the face of the panel. I carry a nail gauge on every inspection. You’d be surprised how often I need it.
- Siding run into the roof surface. I see this on additions and detached garages constantly. Siding has to stop at least 2 inches above any roof surface. - No starter strip at the bottom course. Without a proper starter, the bottom of the wall is unlevel, unsupported, and open at the back side. Most guys skip it to save 20 minutes. Don’t let them.
Does Climate Change Your Math?
Yes. A lot. A coastal Florida homeowner asking about vinyl is having a completely different conversation than someone in Minnesota. Salt air eats aluminum and degrades vinyl faster than UV alone. Freeze-thaw cycles crack stucco and blow out mortar joints — brick veneer that’s 100 years old in South Carolina may need full repointing after 40 years in Minnesota. In high-humidity climates, any wood-based product needs aggressive finish maintenance: repaint every 5 to 7 years, not every 10, or you’re feeding rot season by season.
How old is your attic insulation? That question matters more than the siding brand if you’re in a climate with brutal summers. A poorly insulated attic superheats the wall assembly from the inside — I’ve measured wall cavity temperatures above 140°F on west-facing walls in August on houses with inadequate attic insulation — and that heat accelerates paint failure and thermal cycling in every siding type on the market. Fix the insulation first. Then talk siding.
One More Thing Before You Sign a Contract
Fiber cement installed correctly is your 50-year answer. Brick is your 100-year answer if budget isn’t the constraint.
